Oyedele Calls for Broad Consultations Amid Northern Governors’ Opposition to Tax Reforms

0

The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, has reaffirmed the need for extensive nationwide consultations on the proposed tax reforms, despite resistance from some northern governors. Speaking on Arise Television on Sunday, Oyedele addressed concerns about stakeholder engagement and clarified misconceptions surrounding the reforms.

Oyedele countered claims that the committee bypassed key stakeholders, including governors, during consultations. He revealed that multiple scheduled meetings with governors’ forums were cancelled, but efforts were made to engage with various state officials and industry representatives.

“We have over 20 government institutions represented in this process, alongside private sector participants such as manufacturers and women in business. Additionally, we involved 45 students from 22 universities across Nigeria,” Oyedele noted.

The chairman highlighted that the committee pursued dialogue with governors from each of the six geopolitical zones, yet only the governor of Lagos State attended a meeting. “Despite our outreach, we’ve only been able to meet with the Lagos State governor,” he explained.

Oyedele also described the committee’s inclusive approach, which extended to religious and regional groups. “We had an insightful meeting with the Ulamas—clerics mainly from the north. Over 120 of them participated, and after clarifying misconceptions, many prayed for our efforts,” he shared.

Opposition to Tax Bills
The proposed reforms, including the Value Added Tax (VAT) bill, have faced pushback from northern governors, who argue that the changes could harm their states’ revenue. Elder statesman and northern politician Buba Galadima, appearing on the same program, criticized the committee’s process, alleging that members were not fully involved in the decision-making and that the reforms disproportionately benefit Lagos and Ogun States.

Galadima claimed, “The Oyedele-led group failed to meet with any governor except the Lagos State governor. Some committee members are disowning the report, saying they were excluded from critical decisions.”

A Call for Dialogue
Responding to the opposition, Oyedele underscored the importance of constructive dialogue. “If there are disagreements on specific sections, why withdraw four transformative bills? Let’s address these concerns, present them to lawmakers, and allow them to determine the final position,” he urged.

He emphasized the committee’s commitment to ensuring a balanced and equitable tax system that supports national development. “We remain open to further consultations and are determined to address all concerns to ensure the smooth implementation of the reforms,” he concluded.

The tax reforms aim to ease the burden on low-income earners, eliminate VAT on essential goods, and create a fairer tax structure for economic growth. The committee continues to seek inclusive engagement with all stakeholders to secure widespread support for the initiative.
