Residents of Aduragbemi community in Ido-Osun, Osun State took to the streets in protest on Friday after a newly tarred road collapsed just one day after completion, following heavy rainfall.
The irate residents, carrying placards and chanting slogans, accused the contractor of delivering substandard work and demanded urgent intervention from Governor Ademola Adeleke.
According to community accounts, the road — stretching from Trade Fair/Ido-Osun Junction to Adeleke Estate via Aduramigba — was completed on Wednesday, May 14, but was completely washed away by rain the following day.
Social media user Adekeye Moses alleged that the project was originally approved to be stone-based but was instead constructed using laterite, a cheaper and less durable material. “This is unacceptable. The road didn’t survive 24 hours. We demand an investigation,” he posted.
The residents called on the state government to probe the project, hold the contractor accountable, and ensure that the road is reconstructed with proper engineering standards.
In response, the spokesperson to Governor Adeleke, Olawale Rasheed, confirmed that the contractor has been issued a query and that the Ministry of Works will soon release an official statement.
“The contractor is queried already. The Ministry is issuing a statement soon,” Rasheed stated.
As of the time of filing this report, the contractor and relevant state authorities have yet to provide further clarification.
