Makurdi, Benue State — Tensions have flared in Makurdi following the alleged killing of 23-year-old Emmanuella Ahenjir, a final-year student of the Federal University, Wukari, by unidentified police personnel.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Friday at the Wurukum roundabout, where Emmanuella was said to have been shot while traveling in a vehicle from the Gyado Villa area.

Her death has triggered a wave of protests across the state capital, with hundreds of angry youths taking to the streets to demand justice. The demonstration, spearheaded by renowned gender rights advocate Ukan Kurugh, has drawn significant attention to the growing concerns over police conduct in the region.

Carrying placards with bold messages such as “End Police Brutality” and “Justice for Emmanuella,” the protesters gathered at the Wurukum roundabout — the site of the fatal incident — calling for an immediate and transparent investigation.

They are urging authorities to identify and prosecute the officers responsible, stressing the need for accountability and sweeping reforms within the police force to prevent future tragedies.
