The Nigerian army has reported that troops were slain in an ambush by bandits in Kundu, a village near Zungeru in Niger state’s Wushishi LGA. Onyema Nwachukwu, an army spokesperson, acknowledged the development but did not specify how many people were killed in the attack.
“I can confirm that there was an incident in Wushishi LGA of Niger state,” Nwachukwu told TheCable. “Our valiant patriots paid the ultimate price when they were ambushed by insurgents.
“They persevered until the bitter end. They stood firm and risked their lives to defend our beautiful country.
“The focus now is how to console and bring respite to those they left behind. Sadly the incident occurred while the chief of army staff is on an operational tour of the north-west operations theatre for on-the-spot assessment and reinvigoration of ongoing operations.”
Nwachukwu further stated that the Chief of Army Staff, Taoheed Lagbaja, has visited the affected area to encourage the troops.
According to online reports, 12 of the troops died instantaneously, while eight others were injured. Many people of the hamlet were reportedly taken by the bandits, who also rustled cows.
