Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has affirmed that the local government election scheduled for Saturday will proceed as planned, despite objections from the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi.
Fagbemi had on Thursday advised Adeleke to halt the election, citing a Court of Appeal ruling in Akure that reinstated All Progressives Congress (APC) local government chairmen and councillors, who were sacked by a Federal High Court in Osogbo in 2022.
In a statement released on Friday by his spokesperson, Malam Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke reiterated his commitment to upholding the rule of law while hosting a delegation from the Civil Society Coalition in Osogbo.
“Democracy is governed by the rule of law, and nobody can assume the authority of the court,” Adeleke said. “The election will hold, and its outcome will accelerate development at the grassroots level.”
He urged all stakeholders to maintain peace, assuring that the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) was fully prepared for the poll.
“Our people are ready to exercise their voting rights, and OSSIEC has done a commendable job in preparation,” the governor added. “Other political parties will participate, and there will be a level playing field for all.”
Adeleke emphasized that the election represents a vital step in strengthening local governance and encouraged residents to vote peacefully.
