The Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), Hashim Abioye, has raised concerns over the sealing of the commission’s headquarters in Osogbo on Saturday, even as local government elections commenced across the state.
Speaking during a live current affairs program on Rave FM, Abioye expressed shock at the development and criticized the lack of police presence at polling units. Despite the security challenges, he confirmed that voting had begun in various locations.
“I leave the police IGP in the hands of God. The election has started earnestly in all polling units across the state, but no police presence is noticeable from the information available to me,” he lamented.
This comes after the Nigeria Police had advised the state government against conducting the polls, citing security concerns and legal implications.
However, reporter observed that several polling units along Gbongan-Ibadan Road and Ogo-Oluwa in Osogbo remained deserted, with no electoral officials present, though groups of voters were seen waiting.
While police operatives were stationed along major highways, polling centers lacked security coverage. Despite a government-imposed vehicular movement restriction from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., vehicles were seen moving freely in Osogbo.
