Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has directed an immediate review of the case involving Segun Olowookere, a young man sentenced to death by hanging for allegedly stealing a chicken and eggs.
Governor Adeleke issued the directive through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Tuesday. He instructed the Attorney General to initiate processes for granting clemency under the state’s prerogative of mercy before the end of the year.
In his statement, the governor acknowledged the concerns raised about the case and emphasized the state’s commitment to justice and fairness.
“I have read about the case and directed the Commissioner for Justice to ensure the prerogative of mercy process is initiated for the young man. Osun is a land of justice and equity, and we must protect the sanctity of lives,” Adeleke said, adding that the matter is receiving his direct attention.
The directive follows a passionate appeal by the World Institute of Peace, whose Executive Director, Lamina Kamiludeen Omotoyosi, highlighted that Olowookere was sentenced a decade ago at the age of 17.
Omotoyosi described the sentence as disproportionate, given the minor nature of the crime and the convict’s age at the time. He also pointed out that Olowookere’s parents, Folashade and Olanrewaju, have endured great hardship in their efforts to secure their son’s release.
“Segun’s case raises ethical questions about justice, especially considering he pleaded not guilty and has spent over 10 years in confinement. His parents have made heartfelt pleas for clemency, emphasizing that he is a brilliant young man with a promising future,” Omotoyosi said.
Governor Adeleke’s intervention aims to address these concerns and provide a fair resolution to the matter.
