In commemoration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day on Thursday, members of the Osun Civil Societies Coalition staged a peaceful protest in Osogbo to mark the 32nd anniversary of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election.
The protest, according to organisers, is aimed at honouring the memory of the acclaimed winner of the election, late Bashorun MKO Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and to demand action from government on several long-standing issues.
Speaking to DAILY POST, the Osun State Chairman of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Emmanuel Olowu, said the protest was a call to action on pressing matters that successive governments have failed to adequately address.
“Our demands include good governance at all levels, free, fair and credible elections, adequate security which is non-negotiable, affordable and qualitative education, and the payment of entitlements to MKO Abiola’s family,” Olowu stated.
The protest march commenced at the Baba Onisekere Roundabout in Aiyetoro, Osogbo, and proceeded through Old Garage (Freedom Park) and Olaiya Junction, before concluding at the Adolak Event Centre along Gbongan-Ibadan Road.
Organisers emphasized that the protest was peaceful and aimed at drawing attention to critical national issues, urging the government to recommit to the democratic ideals that June 12 symbolizes.
