Discussions on forming a unified opposition front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections are in their final stages, former APC North-West Vice Chairman, Salihu Lukman, has revealed.
Lukman made this known on Monday while reacting to Atiku Abubakar’s recent statement that opposition leaders are working towards a coalition to unseat the APC. He noted that while no final decisions have been made, consultations are at an advanced stage.
According to Lukman, the key priority of the talks is securing a commitment from opposition leaders to set aside personal ambitions and unite behind a single platform. He also addressed concerns about zoning arrangements, clarifying that while the issue has been raised, reports of disagreements stalling the process are inaccurate.
He further disclosed that efforts by some coalition members to register new political parties were thwarted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), while several smaller parties that failed to secure seats in the last election face the risk of de-registration. This, he warned, could limit the opposition’s options if urgent steps are not taken.
Lukman cautioned that delays in finalizing the coalition could create a de facto one-party system, leaving the APC unchallenged in 2027. He urged Nigerians to recognize the urgency of the situation, emphasizing that waiting until the election year to act could result in a legal and political deadlock that strengthens the ruling party’s grip on power.
