Onyeka Onwenu buried in Lagos

The remains of Nigeria’s celebrated music icon, Onyeka Onwenu, popularly known as the “Elegant Stallion,” have been laid to rest in Lagos.

Onwenu died on July 30, 2024, aged 72, at Reddington Hospital, Ikeja, after collapsing at an event organised in honour of the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Dr Stella Okoli.

The funeral service was held at the Fountain of Life Church, Ilupeju, Lagos. This was followed by a private burial at a vault in Ikoyi.

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi and the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti attended the artist’s burial held on Friday (today).

Onwenu was not only a gifted musician with numerous hits but also a broadcaster, actress, politician, and activist.

She is survived by her two sons.
