Reno Omokri, former presidential aide and prominent social media commentator, has made serious allegations against Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), accusing him of inciting violence that led to the deaths of dozens of security personnel and civilians in Nigeria’s Southeast region.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, Omokri responded to recent remarks by former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who questioned the rationale behind Kanu’s ongoing trial. Obi had described the trial as senseless, sparking sharp criticism from Omokri.
In his response, Omokri claimed to possess video evidence allegedly showing Kanu instructing his followers to attack and kill soldiers, burn down Lagos State, and engage in widespread violence.
“Peter Obi said the trial of Nnamdi Kanu does not make sense. I have a video — which we cannot show here because of BBC — where you can hear him telling his supporters to kill soldiers and burn down Lagos,” Omokri stated.
Citing the aftermath of the alleged incitement, Omokri said, “Over 50 soldiers were killed in the Southeast. An army couple was killed and beheaded in Imo State. In total, 24 policemen lost their lives, and 160 police stations had to shut down following sustained attacks by IPOB, unknown gunmen, and the Eastern Security Network (ESN).”
Omokri questioned why Obi had allegedly failed to condemn these acts of violence, insisting that the prosecution of Kanu is justified given the gravity of the accusations.
“How can you say the trial of someone accused of orchestrating these killings does not make sense?” he asked.
As Kanu’s trial continues to generate political and public reactions, the claims by Omokri further add to the heated debate surrounding the IPOB leader’s legal battles and the wider security challenges in the Southeast.
