The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, has taken a decisive stand against unprofessional conduct at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos. In a firm address to heads of security agencies stationed at the airport, Kuku read the riot act, demanding immediate changes to streamline operations and ensure professionalism. “This behavior must stop,” she declared, underscoring the need for an efficient and dignified passenger experience. “Security personnel conduct” must be reformed, Kuku emphasized.
Speaking during the launch of the “Operation Air Clean” initiative, Kuku addressed the persistent issues caused by overlapping responsibilities and excessive checks conducted by agencies such as Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Customs, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. These actions, she noted, have created unnecessary delays and frustrated travelers. “Investors are complaining,” Kuku stated. “Lagos Airport is their first impression of Nigeria, and it’s unacceptable for that impression to be chaos and inefficiency.”
Kuku highlighted specific incidents that showcased the severity of the problem, including reports of international travelers being subjected to humiliating and unnecessary searches. “Chinese passengers reported being asked to strip down their knickers. This is embarrassing and utterly unacceptable,” she said.
The FAAN boss wasted no time outlining the consequences for agencies failing to meet expected standards. She emphasized accountability, stating, “If your organization is found wanting, it reflects on your leadership, and penalties will be steep. The airport is not a place to exploit or extort; it is a place to serve and safeguard.”
As part of FAAN’s efforts to overhaul operations, Kuku announced several measures, including the establishment of a joint coordination room equipped with CCTV cameras for real-time surveillance. The initiative also aims to deploy dual-view cameras and relocate explosive detection devices to reduce human interference and enhance efficiency. “Technology is key to addressing these issues,” Kuku remarked.
Despite earlier attempts to resolve these challenges, including implementing Executive Order 001 under the Buhari administration, Kuku acknowledged the entrenched behaviors that persist among security personnel. “The number of messages I receive from passengers, the honorable minister, and even the presidency is overwhelming,” she said, reiterating her commitment to holding agency leaders accountable. The launch of Operation Air Clean marks a bold step toward reclaiming the dignity of Nigeria’s busiest airport. Under Kuku’s leadership, FAAN is set to enforce professionalism and eliminate unethical practices. “This airport must reflect the best of Nigeria, not the worst,” she concluded, leaving no room for ambiguity.
