Ogun Pensioners Urge Governor Abiodun to Extend Christmas Bonus

Pensioners in Ogun State have appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to extend the recently paid Christmas and End-of-Year bonus to retirees, following its disbursement to civil servants last week.

In a letter addressed to the governor, the Ogun State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), led by Chairman Waheed Oloyede and Secretary Bola Lawal, acknowledged the prompt payment of December pensions, which allowed pensioners to celebrate the festive season in their own modest way. The union expressed their appreciation for the governor’s gesture, describing it as a “proactive motivational” act that reflected his compassionate and humanistic leadership.

The pensioners, however, urged Governor Abiodun to extend the same Christmas bonus to them. They emphasized that such an extension would enable them to enjoy the Yuletide festivities and feel included in the holiday season celebrations. They expressed that the bonus would provide much-needed support, particularly for the elderly and vulnerable retirees.

Part of the letter read: “Your Excellency, this is to sincerely acknowledge and appreciate you for your kind gesture at ensuring the payment of December 2024 Pensions early enough for us to celebrate Christmas in our own little way. The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Ogun State Council, also joins the Ogun State Labor Centers (NLC, TUC, and the JNC) in appreciating Your Excellency’s goodwill gesture with the provision of Christmas Bonus to the entire Ogun State Workforce, for them to enjoy the bliss of the Yuletide.”

The pensioners added: “Our dear benevolent Governor, we, your aged brothers and sisters, vulnerable Senior Citizens, hereby make a passionate appeal to Your Excellency in the spirit of the Yuletide and the approaching New Year, for such Bonus consideration to be extended to all Ogun State Pensioners, to enable us to enjoy the bliss of the Seasonal celebration.”

The NUP concluded their letter by thanking Governor Abiodun in advance for considering their request and wishing him a “Glorious and Happy New Year 2025.” The pensioners also reaffirmed their high regards for the governor, expressing hope for a positive outcome.
