Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has pledged unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu, stating that Deltans cannot afford to work against a leader who has shown them “so much love.”
Speaking during an official welcome ceremony held in Asaba on Monday, Governor Oborevwori explained that Tinubu’s consistent support for his administration motivated his decision to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He emphasized that the people of Delta must reciprocate the President’s goodwill, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Mr. President has supported us, he has shown us love. We cannot face him in 2027 to work against him. That love that he has shown us in Delta, we need to reciprocate it. We cannot do it in our old party; we have to be inside to do it and do it well,” Oborevwori said.
The defection marks a historic political shift, ending the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) 26-year dominance in Delta State. Oborevwori, alongside his predecessor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, formally left the PDP, bringing a large coalition of political stakeholders into the APC.
Addressing APC leaders and supporters, the governor described the move as more than just a defection, calling it a united “movement” to align Delta with national political realities.
“This is a movement. This is not a defection. We have agreed we’ll move together, and when we move together, what is in national, we’re able to grab it,” he added.
Governor Oborevwori also assured APC governors that the political structure across the state, local government, and ward levels is now firmly with the ruling party, signaling a new political era in Delta State.
