Former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a patriot who dutifully served the nation as a soldier, administrator, and statesman.
DAILY POST reports that Buhari died in London on Sunday at approximately 4:30 p.m., after a prolonged illness.
Reacting to the news in an interview, Obasanjo said Buhari’s death came at a time Nigeria needed the collective wisdom and experience of its past leaders to navigate through the nation’s current challenges.
“It is with a heavy heart that I received this afternoon the passing to glory of a colleague, a comrade, co-patriot, General Muhammadu Buhari,” Obasanjo said.
“As a soldier, he played his role; as an administrator, he played his role; and as a statesman, he played his role. His demise comes at a time we need the totality of the experience and statesmanship of all those who have led this country to help us chart a better course.”
Obasanjo added that Buhari would be deeply missed and prayed for God to grant him eternal rest in Aljanah Firdaus.
General Muhammadu Buhari first served as Nigeria’s Head of State from December 31, 1983, to August 27, 1985, following the military coup that ousted President Shehu Shagari. He later returned as a democratically elected president, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023.
