NYSC Member Raye Apologizes for Calling Lagos a ‘Smelling State,’ Clarifies Intentions

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Lagos, Ushie Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, has apologized for her controversial remarks describing Lagos as a “smelling state.”

Raye’s comments, made in a viral TikTok video where she criticized President Bola Tinubu and lamented Lagos’ environmental conditions, sparked widespread reactions, including from NYSC officials.

In a statement on Instagram on Monday, Raye expressed regret, acknowledging that her words may have offended Lagos residents. She clarified that her remarks were based on personal observations as a newcomer to the city and were never meant to insult its people.

“I want to first of all state that I am sorry to the people who were born and raised in Lagos State if you feel offended by what I said. I am sorry,” she wrote.

Raye explained that her statement was part of a broader 30-day “rant challenge” aimed at shedding light on Nigeria’s pressing economic and social issues. Her plan was to post 20 videos discussing various concerns, but the first video unexpectedly gained traction, resonating with many frustrated Nigerians.

She also highlighted the financial struggles faced by young Nigerians, noting that despite working over 45 hours a week, many still find it difficult to afford simple leisure activities.

Raye urged Nigerians to remain focused on demanding better living conditions rather than getting distracted by fleeting controversies.

“I encourage all of us to ask for what we believe we deserve. If we stay committed to asking for better, we will get better,” she added.
