Union laments five-year delay despite Buhari’s bold approval in 2020
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to implement the welfare packages approved for Nigerian teachers by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2020, expressing frustration over the federal government’s continued delay in fulfilling its promises.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, NUT National President, Comrade Audu Amba, decried the lack of action five years after the Buhari administration approved a comprehensive set of incentives aimed at improving the status and well-being of teachers across the country.
Amba said the non-implementation of the packages — which include improvements to salaries, retirement conditions, housing, and professional development — has contributed significantly to the ongoing challenges facing the education sector. He noted that the morale and productivity of teachers have been negatively affected by the prolonged wait.
He emphasized that the union had consistently reminded the government through formal appeals, public statements, and annual Teachers’ Day messages, but the approved measures remain stalled. He urged President Tinubu to take decisive action, noting that governance is a continuous process and that implementing the policies would reflect true commitment to education reform.
While commending teachers for their perseverance and dedication despite difficult working conditions, Amba appealed to both the federal and state governments to prioritize the welfare of educators as a matter of national importance.
The welfare packages, announced in 2020 during World Teachers’ Day celebrations, were introduced to boost motivation, attract young talent to the profession, and ultimately improve the quality of education delivery in Nigeria.
