The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has commended the Federal Government for its recent pension reforms, including a 20% increase and the introduction of a minimum pension of N32,000 for retirees.

Mr. Godwin Abumisi, National President of the NUP, made the commendation in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja. He applauded the government’s efforts to enhance the welfare of pensioners, particularly highlighting President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to addressing the economic challenges faced by pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS).

Abumisi referred to the 20% pension increase as a “significant milestone” in improving the lives of retirees and acknowledged it as the first pension increase to be implemented without protests. He also praised the introduction of the minimum pension, which he said provides a more stable and secure future for pensioners across the country.

The NUP president expressed gratitude to the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) and its newly appointed Executive Secretary, Ms. Tolulope Odunaiya, for their role in ensuring the timely disbursement of pension increments.

However, Abumisi raised concerns over some pensioners who have not received their full entitlements, urging PTAD to address discrepancies and rectify any errors in the payment process. He emphasized the need for thorough record reviews to ensure all pensioners receive their rightful benefits.

Despite these challenges, Abumisi remains optimistic that ongoing reforms will ultimately lead to a more secure and fulfilling future for Nigeria’s pensioners.
