The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has ordered the immediate detention of officers accused of extorting ₦5.2 million from a traveler, following a directive by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The decision was disclosed in an official statement issued on Wednesday by the Corps’ spokesperson, Afolabi Babawale.
The incident, which sparked nationwide outrage after going viral on social media, involved the alleged extortion of a young man travelling from Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, to Akure, Ondo State.
Reacting swiftly, NSCDC Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Audi, condemned the conduct of the officers, describing their actions as unprofessional and a gross violation of the Corps’ Code of Ethics and Standard Operating Procedure.
In line with the Minister’s directive, Audi ordered that the implicated officers be transferred to the Corps’ national headquarters in Abuja for detention. He also inaugurated a disciplinary committee to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
“The Corps helmsman hinted that the management of the Corps awaits the outcome of the investigation and promised to deal decisively with the officers according to the Public Service Rules if they are found guilty of the alleged offence,” the statement read.
Dr. Audi assured the public of the Corps’ zero tolerance for misconduct, reiterating that accountability and integrity remain central to the Corps’ operations.
He further urged citizens to continue collaborating with the NSCDC by providing credible information without fear of harassment or extortion.
“No officer involved in corrupt practices will be shielded. We are committed to upholding transparency, professionalism, and discipline at all levels,” Audi stated.
The disciplinary committee is expected to submit its findings in the coming days, after which appropriate sanctions will be meted out in accordance with existing civil service regulations.
