A coalition of northern advocacy groups has dismissed calls for the suspension and investigation of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, describing the allegations against him as baseless and politically motivated.
The clarification was made on Monday in a statement by Prince Miaphen, a prominent activist and National Coordinator of the coalition.
Senator Akume has recently faced pressure to step down following accusations that he allegedly obstructed an investigation into an N80 billion fraud case involving his aide, Torhile Uchi.
However, Miaphen strongly refuted the claims, labeling them as deliberate attempts to undermine the credibility of the SGF and distract the Bola Tinubu-led administration.
“These are orchestrated moves by political saboteurs who fear the success of President Tinubu’s administration,” Miaphen said. “We pass a strong vote of confidence in Senator Akume and thank President Tinubu for standing by a man of principle and competence. Nigerians must remain united and not be swayed by false narratives.”
The coalition, which aligns itself with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration, urged the public to disregard what it termed “malicious propaganda.”
It would be recalled that a group known as the Arewa United Patriots had earlier called for Akume’s suspension, alleging interference in the anti-corruption investigation.
As of the time of this report, neither the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) nor the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has issued any official statement on the matter.
