The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has urged Nigerians in the region to give the proposed tax reform a chance, despite widespread opposition.
This appeal came shortly after the inauguration of a newly elected leadership team tasked with steering the association’s affairs for the next five years, focusing on unity, peace, and regional development. The election took place at the National Christian Centre in Abuja, where state chapter chairmen, secretaries, zonal leaders, bloc representatives, and key stakeholders gathered.
Addressing concerns over the controversial tax reform bills, newly elected CAN Chairman for the Northern region, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, revealed that Christian tax law experts had been consulted to assess the potential impact of the reforms. He explained that rather than dismissing the bill outright, the association believes it should be given a trial, urging Northern Christians to approach it with an open mind.
Speaking on insecurity in the region, Rev. Hayab emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy beyond military deployment. He stated that security challenges cannot be resolved by merely sending soldiers or police forces, stressing the importance of addressing the root causes of violence to achieve lasting peace.
The newly elected leadership includes key representatives from the FCT, Borno, and Plateau states, among others. Expressing gratitude for the trust placed in them, Rev. Hayab acknowledged the significant challenges facing Christians in Northern Nigeria and called for resilience, unity, and collective action.
Outlining a vision for the future, he emphasized the need for dialogue and collaboration to foster understanding and problem-solving, as well as community development initiatives that will improve access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. He reiterated the association’s commitment to advocating for justice and equality, ensuring integrity in service, and strengthening interfaith engagement to promote peaceful coexistence.
Rev. Hayab encouraged Christians in Northern Nigeria to remain committed to unity and progress, stating that true development is deeply connected to peace and mutual understanding.
