ABUJA — A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alwan Hassan, has ruled out the possibility of northern Nigeria supporting Labour Party’s Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election, accusing the former Anambra governor of values that clash with northern sensibilities.
Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Tuesday, Hassan questioned Obi’s credibility and criticized his economic ventures, particularly in the alcohol industry.
“Who else do you think would defeat Asiwaju come 2027? Who?” Hassan asked. “Peter Obi, who appeared on your programme asking the north to support him, is the same person celebrating the building of breweries in Anambra and being the biggest importer of alcohol. And he wants the north to vote for him?”
He continued: “We’ll vote for a president that imports alcohol into the north? That’s not going to happen.”
The APC stalwart declared that no candidate stands a chance against President Bola Tinubu in 2027, insisting the opposition lacks the leadership credentials needed to win over Nigerians.
Taking a swipe at unnamed rivals, Hassan added, “Or is it those ones that are saying their wives are taking care of them? We cannot hand over this country to men that are being fed by their wives.”
Hassan’s comments come amid rising political tension as the 2027 elections draw closer, with regional and religious sensitivities already shaping early campaign narratives.
