The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has stated it will not be joining the opposition coalition spearheaded by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing concerns over the alliance’s direction and the need to protect its own political identity.
Buba Galadima, Secretary of the NNPP’s Board of Trustees, made this known in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service. According to him, the party was not consulted or invited to join the coalition but was expected to abandon its well-established structure.
“They did not approach us to join our party, yet they expect us to leave ours and join theirs—on what grounds?” Galadima questioned.
He further emphasized the strength and influence of the NNPP, pointing to the political clout of its national leader, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso. Galadima challenged other politicians to build their own parties and measure their success against the NNPP’s reach and grassroots appeal.
While admitting that a unified opposition front could potentially pose a stronger challenge to the ruling party, Galadima expressed skepticism about the viability and long-term goals of the current coalition efforts, suggesting that fundamental issues must be addressed for any alliance to succeed.
