The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called off its planned strike in Akwa Ibom State following the signing of a new minimum wage agreement by Governor Umo Eno and organized labor.

The announcement was made on Wednesday in Uyo by the NLC Akwa Ibom Chairman, Sunny James, who revealed that the state government has approved a new minimum wage of ₦80,000, effective November 1, 2024. In addition, retirees in the state will benefit from a ₦32,000 increase in their monthly pensions.

James explained that the agreement, signed on December 3, 2024, ensures that the differential arrears from the November salaries, which were paid before the agreement, will be settled by the end of February 2025. Salaries for December 2024 will fully reflect the new minimum wage.

“Following the signing of the New Minimum Wage Agreement between the Government of Akwa Ibom State and Organized Labour, we inform workers that Governor Eno has approved the payment of ₦80,000 as the new minimum wage,” James said.

The agreement also extends to retirees, aligning their benefits with the provisions of a circular issued by the National Salaries, Income, and Wages Commission on September 27.

The NLC praised Governor Eno for his swift action in addressing workers’ demands and emphasized the commitment of the workforce to improved productivity and service delivery.

With this resolution, the indefinite strike scheduled to commence on December 4, 2024, has been suspended, and workers have been instructed to resume duties immediately.
