The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has accused the Federal Government and some state governors of orchestrating a systematic clampdown on dissent, undermining democratic institutions, and illegally withholding workers’ contributions — an act it described as “stealing workers’ sweat.”
NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, made the allegations during the opening ceremony of the 21st edition of the NLC Rain School held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Ajaero warned that Nigeria was edging dangerously close to tyranny, as the rights of citizens — particularly those of the working class — continue to come under attack.
“Today, the Nigerian democratic space has become a battlefield where workers’ rights to free speech, peaceful assembly, and participation in governance are constantly under siege,” he stated.
He further alleged that the current crackdown on civic freedoms and trade union activities is a deliberate strategy to mute organised labour in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
“Governance has taken a backseat as political leaders abandon their responsibilities and focus solely on 2027 electioneering,” Ajaero said. “The consequence is deepening economic hardship, widespread insecurity, and untold suffering for workers and ordinary Nigerians — all driven by policies that disregard the people.”
The NLC president urged Nigerian workers to remain vigilant and continue to demand accountability and justice, stressing that true democracy cannot thrive where the voices of the people are silenced.>
