NJC Denies Reports of CJN Ordering Nnamdi Kanu’s Release, Calls Story False

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has dismissed media reports claiming that the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and NJC Chairman, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, ordered the release and repatriation of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to Kenya.

In a statement on Thursday, NJC’s Deputy Director of Information, Mrs. Kemi Ogedengbe, clarified that the CJN has no involvement in Kanu’s ongoing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

“The council wishes to state that the media report is false and a figment of the writer’s imagination,” the statement read. “There are no court proceedings, decisions, or judgments where such statements were made by the Honorable CJN.”

The NJC further emphasized that Justice Kekere-Ekun neither presided over Kanu’s case at the Supreme Court, where jurisdictional issues were discussed, nor issued any directive regarding his release.

Refuting additional claims, the NJC stated that the CJN never sent a formal apology to the Kenyan government or its high commission over Kanu’s arrest and trial.

The council urged the public to disregard the false reports and warned against the spread of misleading information on judicial matters.
