The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a flash flood risk alert for July 2025, placing over 20 states across the country on high alert due to the intensifying rainfall season.
In its bulletin released on Monday, NiMet identified Sokoto State as facing a high risk of experiencing flash flooding this month. The agency also flagged several other states with notable flood risks, urging residents and local authorities to take urgent precautionary steps.
States listed in the warning include Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.
The agency attributed the heightened risk to the onset and intensity of rainfall expected in different parts of the country throughout July. It warned that flash floods could result in displacement, property loss, road blockages, and increased vulnerability to waterborne diseases.
NiMet advised residents in the identified high-risk areas to:
Clear blocked drainage channels
Relocate from flood-prone zones where necessary
Prepare emergency supply kits
Turn off electrical and gas connections during flooding incidents
Reinforce buildings to guard against mudslides and erosion
The agency emphasized the need for community-wide awareness and preparedness, calling on state governments, emergency services, and local stakeholders to intensify sensitization efforts and mobilize resources to mitigate potential disaster impacts.
This alert follows a similar weather advisory by NiMet forecasting three days of rain and thunderstorms in various parts of the country, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance as the rainy season deepens.
