NiMet Issues Heatwave Alert for Gombe, 17 Northern States

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a severe heat stress warning for Gombe and 17 other northern states, forecasting soaring temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius beginning Saturday, April 12, 2025.

The affected states include Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The advisory was made public through NiMet’s latest weather outlook released on Friday and shared with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Saturday by the Gombe State Meteorological Manager, Gayus Musa.

According to NiMet, the forecast follows a brief spell of rainfall, with clear skies now allowing for increased solar radiation that will heighten discomfort levels.

“Maximum temperatures in the North are reaching up to 40°C. With clear skies and atmospheric moisture, the heat and discomfort will be significantly more intense,” the statement read.

Musa warned that the extreme heat poses serious health risks and urged residents to take proactive safety measures to mitigate its impact.

“Residents should stay in well-ventilated areas, wear light and breathable clothing, drink plenty of water, and avoid exposure to direct sunlight between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.,” he advised.

He also emphasized the need to check on vulnerable groups, particularly children and the elderly, who are most at risk during extreme weather conditions.

The agency called on government bodies, health workers, and community leaders to intensify public awareness campaigns on heat-related illnesses and necessary precautions.

NiMet reiterated that early preparation and public awareness are critical to reducing health complications associated with extreme temperatures.
