The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a stern warning against the unauthorized printing of National Identity Numbers (NIN) by individuals and business centers, describing the act as illegal and a violation of the NIMC Act 23 of 2007.
In a statement released by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, the commission reaffirmed that only the official NIN slip is recognized as a valid means of identification until the rollout of its Improved General Multi-Purpose Card (GMPC).
The upcoming GMPC, according to NIMC, will serve as a multi-functional ID card with embedded payment capabilities, reinforcing both identity verification and financial inclusion.
The commission also alerted security agencies to crack down on unauthorized NIN card production, warning that those involved will face legal consequences.
“The general public and organizations are advised to stop printing any NIN cards outside the authorized NIMC GMPC. Any such card is not recognized by NIMC and should not be used as a means of identification,” the statement read.
NIMC emphasized that only the NIN slip remains the official document for identification and verification until further notice.
