Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister Assures Calm Amid Calls for Deportation of Nigerians in Ghana

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has called for calm following recent social media agitation by some Ghanaians demanding the deportation of Nigerians residing in their country.

Speaking during a joint press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, the minister reassured both Nigerians and Ghanaians that there is no cause for alarm. She emphasized that her visit to Ghana was prompted by viral videos circulating online, which had created anxiety and concerns back home in Nigeria.

“I am here on a fact-finding mission following the reports and viral clips suggesting growing hostility toward Nigerians in Ghana,” Odumegwu-Ojukwu said. “However, since my arrival, I have not witnessed any form of public unrest, such as protests, burning of tyres, or mass demonstrations calling for deportation.”

She noted that the calm atmosphere in Ghana indicates that the country’s leadership is actively managing the situation. According to her, the Ghanaian government and President Nana Akufo-Addo have stepped in to address the matter and ease tensions.

“The Ghanaian authorities are handling the situation effectively,” she said. “We have also engaged with relevant stakeholders, including community leaders and concerned individuals, to foster dialogue and de-escalate any lingering tensions.”

Odumegwu-Ojukwu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining strong bilateral relations with Ghana and emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence between citizens of both countries.

This development comes amid growing regional conversations around migration, security, and economic cooperation within the West African subregion.
