Emem Madu, a Nigerian-born Canadian, has been appointed as a Judge of the Alberta Court of Justice, marking a significant milestone in her distinguished career. The appointment, effective January 31, 2025, places Madu in the Edmonton Family and Youth Division of the Court.
A proud alumna of the University of Lagos, Nigeria, Madu’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Laws from the prestigious institution in 2002, followed by her Barrister-at-Law qualification from the Nigerian Law School in 2003. She furthered her studies with a Master of Laws from the University of Alberta in 2007.
Madu’s professional background spans roles such as a regulatory compliance specialist at ATB Financial, a policy and legislation analyst at Alberta Justice, and a research lawyer at Brownlee LLP in Edmonton.
Her appointment was publicly announced by Professor Gideon Christian, who took to social media to share the exciting news, celebrating Madu’s remarkable achievement as a proud alumna of the University of Lagos.
“A great @UnilagNigeria alumna just got appointed as a Judge of the Alberta Court of Justice. Congrats, Madam Justice Emem Madu. #Naija no dey carry las,” he wrote in his post.
