The Federal Government of Nigeria has firmly refuted claims made by the military leader of Niger Republic, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, regarding an alleged collusion between Nigeria and France aimed at destabilizing Niger. In a statement released on Thursday, Mohammed Idris, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, described the allegations as baseless and a product of imagination.
The government of Niger Republic had accused Nigeria of establishing a so-called “Lakurawa terrorist headquarters” in Sokoto State. This alleged base was purportedly orchestrated in collaboration with France to destabilize Niger. Additionally, the Nigerien government claimed that Nigeria sought to sabotage its pipelines and agriculture, among other actions aimed at undermining the country’s stability.
Responding to the allegations, Minister Mohammed Idris categorically denied any involvement of Nigeria in such activities. He clarified that the Nigerian government has never engaged in any covert or overt alliance with France or any other country to sponsor terrorist activities or destabilize Niger Republic.
Idris emphasized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to peaceful and diplomatic resolutions as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). “President Tinubu has demonstrated exemplary leadership, keeping ECOWAS’ doors open to re-engaging Niger Republic despite the political situation in the country,” Idris stated.
The Minister highlighted Nigeria’s active role in maintaining regional security through the Multinational Joint Task Force, which has been successful in curbing terrorism. “It is, therefore, absurd to suggest that Nigeria would conspire with any foreign power to undermine the peace and security of a neighboring country,” he added.
Idris also refuted claims that any part of Nigeria had been ceded to a foreign power for subversive operations in Niger. He stressed that Nigeria has always upheld its sovereignty and territorial integrity, never permitting foreign military bases on its soil.
The Nigerian government reaffirmed its dedication to fostering peace and cooperation within the ECOWAS region. Idris lauded senior government officials for their relentless efforts to strengthen ties between Nigeria and Niger. “We reiterate our support for the commitment to fostering peace and security between the government and people of Nigeria and Niger,” he said.
Minister Idris concluded by underscoring Nigeria’s commitment to regional leadership and independence. He noted that Nigeria’s refusal to allow foreign military bases is a testament to the country’s dedication to safeguarding its sovereignty and promoting harmony in the West African subregion.
The Nigerian government’s firm denial of these allegations reaffirms its stance on peaceful coexistence and its role as a stabilizing force in West Africa.
