Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has announced a significant policy shift aimed at improving the welfare of casual hospital workers across the state. Effective immediately, all casual workers in state hospitals will receive a monthly salary of ₦80,000, aligning with the state’s approved minimum wage.
The announcement followed complaints from casual employees at Minna General Hospital regarding irregularities in their employment and payment processes. During a meeting with the affected workers in Minna, Governor Bago addressed their grievances, particularly allegations of being short-changed during a recent conversion exercise initiated by his administration.
In his remarks, Governor Bago emphasized that while the new salary structure ensures fair compensation, absorbing all casual workers into the state civil service is not currently feasible. However, he outlined a framework to reward long-serving casual employees.
Casual workers with degree qualifications and a service record of 10 to 15 years will be granted automatic appointments into the state civil service. Meanwhile, those with diploma certificates will be appointed on probation, with a clear expectation to upgrade their qualifications within three years to secure permanent roles.
This decision marks a milestone in Governor Bago’s commitment to addressing employment irregularities and enhancing the welfare of healthcare workers, critical stakeholders in the state’s healthcare delivery system.
