Niger’s military authorities stated on Sunday, August 6, 2023, that the country’s airspace has been closed, warning that any attempt to violate it would result in an “energetic and immediate response.”
“Faced with the threat of intervention, which is becoming clearer due to neighbouring countries’ preparations, Niger’s airspace is closed from this day on Sunday… for all aircraft until further notice,” the country’s new authorities stated in a statement.
The statement came as the West African bloc ECOWAS’s deadline for returning control to democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum approached.
Last Sunday, ECOWAS issued an ultimatum to Niger’s new military leadership to step down within a week or face military involvement. Bazoum was detained at the presidency on July 26 by members of his protection.
