NIDCOM Condemns Anti-Nigerian Protest in Ghana, Urges Calm Among Citizens

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has condemned a recent protest in Ghana where some demonstrators demanded the deportation of Nigerians over alleged criminal activities.

The protest, which gained traction through a viral video circulating on social media, showed a group of Ghanaians accusing certain Nigerians of engaging in crimes and exhibiting conduct deemed contrary to Ghanaian societal values.

In a swift response, NIDCOM Chairman and CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the blanket criminalisation of Nigerians as “unfair and dangerous,” stressing that the actions of a few individuals should not be used to judge an entire nationality.

“Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves. Those who break the law should be identified and subjected to the appropriate legal processes,” she stated.

Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the long-standing diplomatic and historical ties between Nigeria and Ghana, referring to both countries as “Siamese twins” who must continue to live in harmony in the spirit of ECOWAS and regional cooperation.

The NIDCOM boss called for calm among Nigerians residing in Ghana, urging them not to engage in any form of violence or reprisal. She confirmed that the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana is monitoring the situation closely, and that the matter is being addressed through diplomatic channels.

She also debunked unverified claims circulating online about the destruction of Nigerian-owned shops and properties in Ghana, warning against the spread of misinformation that could escalate tensions.

“There is no verified evidence to support these claims, and we must do everything possible to prevent any form of retaliation,” she cautioned.

Furthermore, Dabiri-Erewa urged both Nigerian and Ghanaian citizens to refrain from using inciteful language, noting that such rhetoric could worsen the situation.

She commended the efforts of the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissioners, as well as the proactive steps taken by the Nigerian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in engaging with Ghanaian authorities to ensure a peaceful resolution.

NIDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of Nigerians abroad, while encouraging citizens to continue being law-abiding and respectful of their host communities.
