The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has swiftly responded to the devastating June 13 attack on Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State by delivering essential relief materials to affected residents.
The attack, which left scores dead, homes razed, and properties destroyed, prompted an urgent humanitarian response. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), NEMA’s intervention aims to provide immediate succour to the displaced and restore a sense of stability in the embattled community.
Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, said the relief effort followed a rapid needs assessment jointly conducted by NEMA, the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, and security agencies. She added that a more comprehensive assessment would follow to evaluate long-term support needs.
Represented by NEMA North Central Zonal Director, Mr. Aliyu Waziri, Umar reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to easing the suffering of the victims. “NEMA remains committed to working with all stakeholders to alleviate the suffering of victims and restore normalcy to the affected community. We pray for peace in our communities to avoid this kind of harrowing experience,” she said.
The relief items included food and non-food essentials such as parboiled rice, maize, spaghetti, vegetable oil, seasoning cubes, tomato paste, iodised salt, and mattresses.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, commended NEMA for its swift response. He noted that the support would significantly ease the burden on the affected families.
The intervention underscores ongoing efforts to support conflict-hit communities and prevent further humanitarian crises across the country.
