NDLEA Smashes Kano Drug Rings, Arrests 49, Seizes Illicit Substances and Weapons

KANO — The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has arrested 49 suspects in a sweeping two-day operation targeting major drug hotspots across the state.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Wednesday, noting that the raids took place on August 7 and 8 as part of intensified efforts to curb drug-related crimes.

According to him, 34 suspects were apprehended at notorious drug hubs including Massallacin Idi, Fagge Plaza, Kofar Mata, Kofar Wambai, Kofar Dan’agundi, Makabartar Dan’agundi, Ladanai, Zage, and Tashar Rimi at Rimi Market. Another 15 were arrested at Kano Line Motor Park and Tashar Rami Motor Park in Na’ibawa.

Recovered items include cannabis sativa, Pregabalin, diazepam, codeine syrup, Rohypnol, “suck and die,” rubber solution, and locally made weapons.

NDLEA State Commander, Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, said the raids were part of a wider strategy to dismantle drug joints and disrupt criminal networks.

“Since the elevation of the NDLEA’s operations to a strategic command level, there has been a notable increase in the effectiveness and scope of our work,” Idris-Ahmad stated, commending NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba-Marwa, for his leadership and unwavering support.

He warned drug traffickers to desist from their activities, stressing that the agency will not relent in its mission to achieve a drug-free society.

“The NDLEA remains dedicated to protecting the public from the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking,” he said, adding that investigations are ongoing and the suspects will be charged in court upon completion.
