The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is set to convene its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, from February 5 to 7, to deliberate on pressing national issues and challenges facing the legal profession.
High on the agenda are critical concerns such as escalating insecurity, including banditry, kidnapping, and farmer-herder conflicts, as well as the nation’s economic downturn and evolving political landscape.
The Ondo State government, under the leadership of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, will host the event, which will take place at the International Cultural and Event Centre, The Dome, in Akure. The governor is expected to formally declare the meeting open.
According to the Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, the event marks a significant moment for the state, especially after a decade-long hiatus from hosting such a prestigious gathering.
“This meeting, drawing top legal minds and practitioners from across the country, is not just an internal NBA gathering; it is a momentous event that highlights the rich legal heritage and progressive vision of Ondo State,” Ajulo stated.
He further emphasized that the presence of esteemed legal professionals would encourage dialogue, collaboration, and innovation that could positively shape the legal landscape of the state and the nation.
Discussions at the NEC meeting will also focus on strategic planning for the legal community, addressing challenges within the justice system, and fostering reforms aimed at improving legal practice in Nigeria.
In recognition of the significance of the event, a series of formal engagements have been scheduled, including a cocktail reception hosted by the Chief Judge on February 5 and a state banquet in honor of the delegates on February 7, hosted by the governor.
Dr. Ajulo extended appreciation to NBA President, Chief Afam Osigwe, SAN, the General Secretary, Dr. Mobolaji Ojibara, and the entire leadership of the association for selecting Ondo State as the venue for this critical assembly.
The meeting is expected to yield far-reaching resolutions aimed at enhancing the legal profession and addressing key national concerns.
