NATO Chief Confident in US Commitment Despite Trump’s Controversial Moves

NATO chief Mark Rutte reaffirmed on Wednesday that the United States remains firmly committed to the alliance, despite concerns that President Donald Trump’s actions could be straining transatlantic relations.

Speaking on the eve of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, Rutte expressed his unwavering belief in the alliance’s longevity and the US’s dedication to collective defense.

“I’m absolutely convinced this alliance is there to stay with the US. Their commitment is absolutely clear,” Rutte stated.

Since taking office just over two months ago, the Trump administration has sparked anxiety among allies by suggesting a possible withdrawal of US forces from Europe, reaching out to adversary Russia over the Ukraine conflict, and issuing statements perceived as threatening towards Canada and Denmark.

Further fueling concerns, Trump is expected to announce new trade tariffs later on Wednesday that could impact the economies of NATO member states.

Acknowledging the apprehension voiced by European allies, Rutte emphasized Washington’s repeated assurances. “I know there has been some tough language. I know that there have been allies, for example, on this side of the pond being worried about the long-term commitment of the US to NATO,” he said. “The Americans have stated again and again: ‘We are committed to NATO. We are committed to Article 5’,” he added, referencing the alliance’s collective defense clause.

In the lead-up to a June summit in The Hague, Trump is pushing for increased defense spending among NATO members, with Washington advocating for a new target of five percent of GDP.

“This commitment comes with a clear expectation that on this side of the Atlantic and in Canada, we will spend more,” Rutte noted.

Nervous allies are set to urge US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to clarify Washington’s position on NATO and Ukraine during two days of talks in Brussels beginning Thursday. Diplomats are hopeful that Rubio will provide insights into Trump’s vision for a potential agreement with Moscow and address concerns about a possible reduction of US forces in Europe.
