The National Assembly has lauded Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, for the impressive performance of the Ministry’s 2024 budget. The commendation came during a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Interior, led by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, APC, Edo North, where the Minister appeared to defend the Ministry’s proposed 2025 budget.
Tunji-Ojo revealed that the Ministry’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) far exceeded its target in 2024, reaching an extraordinary N4.5 billion—well above the N1.2 billion goal set for business expatriates’ quotas and naturalisation. This remarkable surge, the Minister explained, stemmed not from a rise in expatriates’ quota revenue, but from strategic measures implemented within the Ministry, including the automation of key processes that improved revenue collection and streamlined operations.
“The total revenue target for 2024 was N2 billion, but we surpassed this, generating over N5 billion,” Tunji-Ojo said, crediting the Ministry’s automated solutions and improved linkages for the significant increase in revenue.
Lawmakers expressed their satisfaction with the Ministry’s performance, with Senator Oshiomhole praising the Minister’s detailed and thorough presentation. “You have done extremely well,” Oshiomhole said. “We have seen your work in 2024, and we expect even more in 2025, knowing the energy and dedication you bring.”
As part of the budget defense, the Minister also proposed a 2025 budget of N6.68 billion, with allocations for Personnel (N1.69 billion), Overhead (N1.16 billion), and Capital (N3.83 billion).
The National Assembly’s approval of the 2025 budget is expected to follow, with confidence in the Ministry’s ability to meet and surpass expectations once again.
