The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned in strong terms the brutal assault on Corps member, Edema Elohor Jennifer, by operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.
DAILY POST recalls that female corps members serving in Anambra were recently attacked by vigilantes, with Jennifer left severely battered in the incident.
In a statement released Tuesday night, NANS Public Relations Officer, Comrade Samson Adeyemi, described the attack as “unjustified, dehumanizing, and a gross violation of the dignity, safety, and fundamental rights” of a Nigerian youth serving her fatherland under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
“It is deeply troubling that such brutality could be meted out to a corps member, an individual who has answered the national call to service and who deserves every protection and respect guaranteed under the law,” Adeyemi said.
He warned that the rising trend of unregulated security outfits acting with impunity is a dangerous affront to national service, rule of law, and human rights, calling it a matter of urgent national concern.
NANS urged the Anambra State Government and relevant authorities to launch a full investigation, ensure that those responsible are brought to justice, and put measures in place to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
Adeyemi further stressed the importance of guaranteeing corps members’ safety at their primary assignments and residences across the country.
The association reaffirmed its solidarity with Jennifer, pledging unwavering commitment to defending the rights and welfare of Nigerian students and youths, while urging the NYSC and security agencies to collaborate in safeguarding corps lodges nationwide.
