The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a large cache of prohibited drugs hidden inside plumbing material shops at the Onitsha Bridgehead drug market in Anambra State.

In a post shared on its official X account, NAFDAC revealed that the raid led to the seizure of two trailer loads of unregistered narcotics, banned tramadol, and counterfeit drugs. A video accompanying the post showed officials retrieving the illegal substances concealed within the plumbing shops.

“In a startling discovery, NAFDAC uncovered prohibited drugs hidden inside PLUMBING MATERIALS SHOPS at the Onitsha Bridgehead Drug Market,” the agency stated. “Officials seized two trailer loads of unregistered narcotics, banned tramadol, and counterfeit drugs concealed within these shops.”

The operation comes amid ongoing security clampdowns in Onitsha, where traders have faced significant losses due to the prolonged closure of six major markets by security operatives. For over two weeks, markets have remained shut as authorities intensify efforts to combat the sale of fake and expired drugs.

The affected markets include the Onitsha Drug Market, Oduwani (Power Tools and Allied) Market, Surgical Line Market, Plumbing Materials Market, Ogbogwu Fashion Line Market, Bridgehead Provision Market, and parts of the Timber Dealers Market.

Security operatives continue to maintain a heavy presence in the area as the crackdown on counterfeit drug dealers persists.
