Weeks after being disconnected by the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (Ikeja DISCO) over a disputed N4.3 billion electricity bill, the Logistics Command of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in Ikeja, Lagos, has had its power supply restored.
The development follows last week’s reported invasion of Ikeja DISCO’s corporate headquarters and Oshodi Business Unit by Air Force personnel, who allegedly disrupted operations in protest of the prolonged blackout at the base.
Although the disputed bill remains unsettled, sources indicate that discussions are ongoing to address the outstanding payment. Vanguard reliably gathered that power restoration was contingent upon the installation of prepaid meters at the Air Force Base, a measure aimed at ensuring accountability and regulating electricity consumption.
A senior official at Ikeja DISCO confirmed the installation, stating, “We have implemented a prepaid metering system similar to the Army cantonment model. With this in place, they will now only consume electricity based on payments made.”
The official further noted that previous efforts to introduce prepaid meters had been resisted, but the recent intervention has now provided a resolution. “The issue of outstanding debt is still under discussion at the federal level in Abuja. However, the immediate challenge has been addressed, and power supply has been restored,” the source added.
Confirming the development, a Logistics Command official said, “The prepaid meter was installed on Wednesday, and it is fully operational. The base now has electricity.”
Meanwhile, an investigation into last week’s invasion of Ikeja DISCO facilities is ongoing. “The Nigerian Air Force is a professional body and will handle the situation appropriately,” the source assured.
