ABUJA — Tech billionaire and owner of social media platform X, Elon Musk, has insisted that the platform will remain a space for free expression where all sides of an argument are heard, despite mounting pressure from the Nigerian government to suspend activist Omoyele Sowore’s account.
In a post on his handle Sunday, Musk reiterated that content moderation on X is community-driven rather than dictated by governments or corporations.
“On this platform, the people decide the narrative. You hear all sides of an argument. Community Notes corrects everyone, no exceptions. Notes data & code is public source. Grok provides further fact-checking,” Musk wrote.
His remarks come after reports that Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) wrote to X Corp., demanding the suspension of Sowore’s account and the takedown of a post critical of President Bola Tinubu.
On August 25, Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and publisher of Sahara Reporters, posted a video of Tinubu during a state visit to Brazil, criticizing the president’s claim that corruption no longer exists in Nigeria.
The outspoken activist’s posts have long attracted government scrutiny, with his latest comments escalating tensions between the Tinubu administration and the influential social media platform.
