Mumuni Urges Tinubu to Deploy Drones to Secure Nigeria’s Borders

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ambassador Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has called on President Bola Tinubu to strengthen Nigeria’s border security through the deployment of modern surveillance technologies, including drones and biometric systems.

In a letter addressed to the president and made available to DAILY POST on Thursday through his Media Aide, Rasheed Abubakar, Mumuni expressed concern over Nigeria’s escalating security challenges, linking many of them to the country’s porous borders.

He highlighted that terrorism, kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, and illegal migration have continued to plague the nation largely because of inadequate border control and surveillance mechanisms.

“Our nation’s borders, being the first line of defense against these threats, deserve immediate attention,” Mumuni stated. “We must move beyond reliance on misguided advisers who lack expertise in counter-terrorism and security management.”

The APC stalwart stressed the need for a comprehensive audit of Nigeria’s existing border infrastructure and urged the Federal Government to urgently equip security agencies with the necessary tools to function effectively.

He noted that stronger borders would not only curb the influx of criminal elements but also enhance Nigeria’s economic prospects by improving trade relations and creating safer communities.

“A porous border allows insurgents and criminal elements to infiltrate and operate unchecked,” he said. “Illicit trade routes facilitate arms smuggling, drug trafficking, and the movement of stolen goods. Strengthening border security will help curb these illegal activities, which often fund terrorism and organized crime.”

Mumuni also advocated for the integration of modern surveillance tools to monitor activities across Nigeria’s land borders, which span thousands of kilometers and remain largely unmanned or under-patrolled.

“Invest in modern surveillance technologies, including drones and biometric systems, to monitor border activities. These tools can provide invaluable data on movement patterns and potential threats,” he said.

He further recommended enhanced collaboration between military and police forces through joint operations, regular training, and better equipping of personnel stationed at border areas.

According to Mumuni, implementing these measures will not only deter criminal activities but also instill a sense of safety among citizens, encouraging greater cooperation with security agencies and fostering national stability.
