According to reports, four worshippers were killed when a part of the Zaria major mosque in Kaduna state fell. The incident was confirmed by Ahmed Bamalli, Emir of Zazzau.
The catastrophe happened around 4 p.m. on Friday when attendees were praying, and seven additional persons were claimed to have been injured.
The Emir stated that the mosque’s walls had developed cracks and that there were preparations to fix them prior to the catastrophe.
“We had noticed a crack in the mosque’s wall yesterday and were planning to deploy a team of civil engineers to repair it when this unfortunate incident occurred,” he explained.
Bamalli ordered that prayers be held outside the mosque until the repairs are completed.
He also directed that the funeral prayer for the four victims be held at the emir’s palace at 8.30 p.m.
The worshippers were in the second “sujud of Asr prayer” when a part of the mosque collapsed, according to Shehu Nagari, a survivor who narrowly escaped being trapped.
Nagari stated that the building collapsed on individuals seated immediately at the portion, killing four people and that the collapsed section of the mosque, which was made of mud, had been there for over 150 years.
