In a historic move, the Lagos State House of Assembly has sworn in its first female Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Meranda. She took the oath of office on Monday during a plenary session, following the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Representing Apapa 1 State Constituency, Hon. Meranda brings a wealth of experience and a legacy of public service. First elected in 2015, she has been re-elected twice, in 2019 and 2023, solidifying her reputation as a dedicated legislator.

Born on August 16, 1980, Hon. Meranda hails from the royal family of the late Chief T. A. Lawal Akapo (Ojora of Lagos) and Princess M. A. Lawal-Akapo. Her lineage includes prominent Lagos royal houses such as Ojora, Aromire, Onitana, Oloto, and Oniru.

Her late father served as a legislator before becoming the Ojora of Lagos, while her brother, Oba AbdulWasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, is the current Oniru of Iruland.

Hon. Meranda began her education at St. Charles Nursery and Primary School, later attending Randle Primary School in Surulere. Her secondary education was completed at Lagos Anglican Girls Grammar School and Ansar-Ud-Deen Secondary School, where she excelled as a library prefect and secretary of the press club.

She earned a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration from Lagos State University in 2013 and later pursued further studies at the University of Lagos.

Her professional career spans roles in technology, oil and gas, and local government administration. She served as a personal assistant to Dr. Olumuyiwa Gbadegesin under former Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu and later worked as a procurement manager with Cirrus Nigeria Limited.

Returning to politics in 2008, Hon. Meranda held key positions in Apapa Local Government before her election to the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2015. Her leadership and commitment to public service have now culminated in her historic rise as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.
