Mojisola Meranda Assumes Office as Lagos Assembly Speaker, Holds Prayer Session

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, officially moved into the Speaker’s office at the Assembly Complex on Monday, January 27, 2025. Videos shared on social media captured scenes of her supporters offering prayers and expressing gratitude as she formally assumed her new role.

Security within the Assembly Complex was notably heightened ahead of Monday’s plenary session, amidst growing speculation of a possible showdown in the House. The increased vigilance comes in the wake of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa’s recent claim that he remains the legitimate Speaker.

Obasa, who was removed by a majority of lawmakers on January 13, 2025, faces allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation. However, in a statement on Saturday, he denied the accusations and challenged the Assembly to provide evidence to substantiate the claims.

Since Obasa’s impeachment, Meranda has presided over two plenary sessions, with the former Speaker notably absent from both. Monday’s plenary marks the third session under her leadership.

The political tension surrounding the transition of power has drawn significant attention, with some members of the public and media highlighting the implications of the ongoing leadership dispute.
