Minister: Abuja Blast Was Accidental, Not Terrorist

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed circulating reports suggesting a suicide bombing incident occurred in Abuja earlier this week.

Clarifying the situation on Wednesday during a project inspection tour in the FCT, Wike stated that the explosion along the Mararaba-Nyanya bypass was not an act of terrorism, as speculated, but an unfortunate accident involving explosive materials.

According to the Minister, preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had unknowingly picked up explosive materials from a quarry site, which later detonated.

“This was not a suicide bombing. The individual ignorantly carried an explosive device, which unfortunately exploded on him,” Wike explained.

Echoing the Minister’s clarification, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident in a statement. She noted that the victim sustained severe injuries and was promptly taken to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, urging residents to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information.
