On Monday, June 19, 2023, the new president of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who took over from President Muhammadu Buhari on May 29, 2023, ordered the sack of the service chiefs who worked with the previous president and appointed new ones.
Below are the list of the newly appointed service chiefs as well as their portfolio:
1. Mallam Nuhu Ribadu as National Security Adviser
Born on November 21, 1960, Ribadu is the first Nigerian NSA with a non-military background since 1999. He was also the first appointed chairman at EFCC and he retired as the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG).
2. Maj. Gen. C.G. Musa as Chief of Defence Staff
Born on December 25, 1967, Major General Christopher Gabwin Musa was commissioned to the Army as second lieutenant in, Infantry Corps in 1991. He got deployed in 2021 as Commander, of Joint Task Force (North East), Operation Hadin Kai, where he was until his new appointment.
3. Maj. T. A Lagbaja as Chief of Army Staff
Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja was born on February 28, 1968, in Osun state. In 1992, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps. He was also an instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy between 2001 to 2004.
4. Rear Admiral E. A. Ogalla as Chief of Naval Staff
Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla is the second chief of Naval staff from the Igbo tribe and is the 24th chief of Naval Staff. Born on December 20, 1968, remained Director of Lessons Learnt at NHQ (PPLANS).
5. AVM H.B Abubakar as Chief of Air Staff
Air Vice Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar was born on September 19, 1992. He joined the NAF as a member of NDA RC 39, and on September 19, 1992, he was promoted to Pilot Officer. He served as the Chief of Standards and Operations at HQ NAF before he was appointed the 22nd Chief of the Air Staff.
6. DIG Kayode Egbetokun as Acting Inspector-General of Police
Born on September 4, 1964, Kayode Egbetokun graduated with a Bachelor’s in Mathematics from the University of Lagos in March 1990. Up until his appointment on Monday, he acted in the capacity of deputy inspector general of police.
7. Maj. Gen. EPA Undiandeye as Chief of Defense Intelligence
Major General Emmanuel Parker Akomaye Undiandeye was promoted to the rank of Major General in December 2020. While his age is unknown, he held the position of Major General until his appointment by President Tinubu as Chief of Defense Intelligence.
